Once upon a time ago, before I was a wife and a mother, I had an idea of what being in those roles would be like.

Some words that were maybe floating around in my mind:

Romantic

Easy

Whimsical

Fun

Well, it's been about 8 years since becoming a wife and 7 since becoming a mom. And, all I can say is that it's not everything I thought it would be.

First of all, my wedding had a few minor details go wrong. If that wasn't indication of what marriage would be like, I don't know what is!

Then, I got pregnant on my honeymoon and my husband was still serving in Afghanistan so he missed the first five months of our first pregnancy.

I gained about 50 lbs and plummeted into the depths of despair of self-pity and woe.

After almost a year, ended up pregnant again (just so you know, "pull and pray" doesn't always work)

Now I had two kids in less than 2 years and zero self-confidence.

Seven months after my second was born, I found out I was expecting again...(IUD's don't always work either).

In three years--the first 3 years of my marriage that was supposed to be so romantic, amazing, sweet, fun, and whimsical--I was pregnant, hormonal, fat, annoyed, and felt anything but sexy!

It was hard. It was everything opposite of what it was in my mind.

I learned a hard lesson: Sometimes life doesn't always happen the way I envision. Sometimes it's a disappointment; sometimes it's messy. It's messy a lot.

Now, I know that marriage and motherhood come with many different words. Words like:

Complicated.

Exhausting.

Uncertain.

But I also know that those words don't define who I am. Why? Because I am a woman who is hardcore. I looked life straight in the face and punched it as hard as I could. I didn't give up when I felt like giving up. I fought for my marriage when I had to, and I became the mother my children needed. I am my own superhero because I have learned how to be empowered, confident, and ready to kick a** if I need to.
